How to build easy editable navigation menu using PHP script in a static website?

This article is written specially for newbie Web Designers. In this article, you can understand, How to build a easy editable Navigation menu using PHP programming in a static Website. You don't need advanced programming knowledge to create the simple menu system.

Guess, I have designed a static HTML Website for my client. The Website has 4 additional inner pages. I have added links to the 4 inner pages from the Home page. I also created links to the home page from the 4 inner pages to go to any page from any page.

After some days, the client wanted to add another new additional inner page in this Website. I can't add the new additional page without editing the navigation menu in Home page and 4 additional pages. If  i have more inner pages, its risk and will take more times to edit the links.

What's the Idea?It is a simple concept by using PHP 'include' function.

To build a easy editable navigation menu in a static website follow below steps.

I have using Adobe Dreamweaver as my editing software.

1. Open a New PHP page in Dreamweaver (You can see it on Dynamic) and Save this page as your Home page (index).
2. Create your Home page design as static Website.
3.  Don't add any links in the DIV tag of Navigation Menu.
4. Paste the code in the DIV tag of Navigation Menu. <?php include_once 'includes/navigation.php'; ?>
5. Create a folder in the website and give 'includes' as the file name.
6. Create a new PHP page and Give file name as 'navigation' and save it on the 'includes' folder.
7. Open the page 'navigation.php' and go to 'code' view of page. Then delete all data (including all html and php scripts and all texts) and create the navigation links in this page.(Note: you don't add the navigation DIV tag in this page. You need only create the links to the pages (href).
8. Create inner pages and paste the code (step 4) in the DIV tag of Navigation Menu in all inner pages.

Finished!.

You can now edit your navigation menu at any time from the 'navigation.php' page. The changes of links will be appeared in all pages.

How to get a XML backup file of your WordPress or Blogger Blog posts?
If you are using WordPress or Blogger Blog platforms, taking a backup of your Blog posts is very important. You can take a backup of your Blog posts regularly using the Blog backup option. You may take a backup at least once in a month (or if you are a serious Blogger, may be take a backup at weakly or daily).

How to take a backup of your Blog Posts easily?

WordPress (self hosted blogs)
To take backup of your your posts, pages, comments, custom fields, terms, navigation menus and custom posts in WordPress, please follow below steps.

1. Sign in to your WordPress Blog
2. Go to 'Tools' menu and click on 'Export'
3. Select 'All content'  (This will contain all of your posts, pages, comments, custom fields, terms, navigation menus and custom posts)
4. Click on 'Download Export File'

Wait a moment or some minutes (the downloading time is based on the file size of backup file). You will get a XML file as a backup of your Blog. You can import the exported file using the 'Import' tool to any your Blog. Please keep in mind the backup not included your images. You may take back of your images using any FTP application like File Zilla. Also you can move the images to nay new server by using the FTP applications.

Blogger
To taking a backup of your Blog posts in Blogger Blog platforms, please follow the steps.

1. Sign in to your Blogger Blog.
2. Go to 'Settings' Tab'
3. Then click on 'Other'
4. In Blog Tools, you can see 'Export Blog'
5. Select the link 'Export Blog'
6. Then click on 'Download Blog'

 Wait a moment, you will get the XML backup file in shortly. You can be kept it as a backup on your computer or imported into another blog.
